These stomach-churning pictures capture what could be the most painful event of the Beijing Olympics so far.

Hungarian weightlifter Janos Baranyai's first Olympics ended in agony after appearing to break his right elbow.

The 24-year-old was yesterday trying to pull of one of heaviest weight classes of the games - 148kg in his third lift in the 77kg division.

The gruesome shots show the moment his elbow popped out of its socked, in-fact dislocating rather than snapping.

Baranyai fell to the floor screaming in agony as his coaching staff and officials rushed to help and cover him, while the spectators and millions of viewers around the world looked on in horror.

Weightlifting spokesman Sam Coffa said: "He injured his elbow, it's a dislocation. He'll be alright but it's just an ugly thing."

Tensions ran high yesterday as several lifters staggered and stumbled under the weights, slapping the map or screaming with frustration after failed attempts.

Several lifters suffered injuries over the past couple of days as the competition moved towards the higher weight classes, where athletes try to hoist up barbells weighing around 200kg in the clean and jerk.
