These are the death-defying images of the amazing Devil’s Swimming Pool – a natural wonder which is quite literally taking extreme sports to new heights.

The pictures show adrenaline junkie swimmers lying half off the edge of a 110m (360ft)  high waterfall in Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe – and just moments from certain death if they were unlucky enough to be swept over.

Tourists visiting the waterfall during September and December can swim as close as possible to the edge of the falls without falling over, according to reports.

Guides at the spot insist it is safe to lie there during the dry season when the flow of the Zambezi River is at its lowest.

The falls – located on the Zimbabwe-Zambia border - have started to become well known among the thrill - seeking travel industry, with more and more people searching for the ultimate experience.

Not only do they swim close to the edge of the waterfall, they pose for pictures hanging upside-down over the edge.

However, the daredevils have to wade across strong currents to get to the pool before they are swept towards the lip of the waterfall.

The waterfall is a no-go during the wet season, when 500 million litres of water cascade over the pool every minute.

These particular happy snaps are believed to be an American couple who visited the falls to celebrate their first wedding anniversary.

Francisc Stugren, 35, from Seattle, reportedly described the thrill of the interesting new water sport as “better than bungee jumping”.

He said: “Being in the Devil's Pool is a serious adrenaline rush for the first few minutes.

“The thought that you may get sucked away from the relatively calm waters of the pool and down the foamy hell into the pit makes you giddy with apprehension.”
