The luckless bird was torn to shreds in the impact, while a large hole was torn into Arch’s tailplane. Thankfully he was able to finish the race in an impressive third place and land safely.

"At the end of the day I am just pleased that I was able to complete the course and that nothing more serious happened"

Arch said: “The bird hit threw me way off course. I had no chance of keeping the plane on the right line; I just had to check that everything was still working OK.

“At the end of the day I am just pleased that I was able to complete the course and that nothing more serious happened.”

Austrian Arch is in the lead in this year’s championship after winning the first race in Dubai.
