A COMPETITOR in the Red Bull Air Race had a lucky escape after his plane smashed into a bird.
Reigning champion Hannes Arch was on course to win the San Diego, California, race when he hit the bird, believed to be a heron, at a speed of over 200mph.

The luckless bird was torn to shreds in the impact, while a large hole was torn into Arch’s tailplane. Thankfully he was able to finish the race in an impressive third place and land safely.
"At the end of the day I am just pleased that I was able to complete the course and that nothing more serious happened"
Arch said: “The bird hit threw me way off course. I had no chance of keeping the plane on the right line; I just had to check that everything was still working OK.

Austrian Arch is in the lead in this year’s championship after winning the first race in Dubai.
