Naked PETA protest in St Paul's over bearskins worn by Buckingham Palace guards

One hundred blood-smeared protesters, naked except for bear masks, take over St Paul's to protest the use of bearskin on the Queen's Guards' hats

7 June 2009

ANIMAL activists have made a bloody nuisance of themselves in St Paul’s to protest against the use of bearskins for the Queen’s Guards’ hats.

Around 100 naked and apparently blood-soaked members of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) laid down on a set of steps by the cathedral to draw attention to the plight of bears, wearing nothing but bear masks.

The protest took place on the corner of Distaff Lane and Peter's Hill in Knightrider Court, just six days before the Queen’s Birthday Parade, when hundreds of Guardsmen will parade in bearskin hats.

"I'll gladly bare my skin if it will help save bears' skins"

According to PETA, it can take an entire bear hide to make a single hat, and often the bears’ orphaned young are left to starve.

PETA member Rebecca Jameson said: "I'll gladly bare my skin if it will help save bears' skins.

"As the Queen celebrates her birthday in royal style, many black bears won't live to see another birthday."

The Ministry of Defence have said they intend to switch to synthetic fur.
