Mexican authorites have seized over 20 sharks stuffed with cocaine
Over a ton of the drug was stuffed inside the frozen carcasses of over 20 sharks
17 June 2009
THE Mexican navy seized more than a ton of cocaine yesterday that had been hidden in the carcasses of 20 frozen sharks. The astonished naval officers discovered the drugs after performing a routine check on a container ship in a port in the southern Mexican state of Yucatan.
Navy Commander Eduardo Villa told reporters: "Those in charge of the shipment said it was a conserving agent but, after checks, we confirmed it was cocaine."
The drugs were being stored in slabs that were concealed inside the shark’s bodies, indicative of ever-growing attempts on the part of Mexican drug lords to successfully smuggle narcotics into the United States. These attempts become more inventive as Mexico takes its drug problem more seriously – President Felipe Calderon has sent 45,000 troops and federal police across the country in order to thwart the illegal actions of powerful drug cartels.
Mexico’s most wanted criminal, Joaquin ‘Shorty’ Guzman who seeks to control both Mexican and Central American smuggling routes into the United States has been held responsible for this increase of drug-related crimes. His net worth currently stands at $1 billion.
Other hiding places for the drug in the past have included furniture, sealed beer cans and even religious statues.
