A BOY who cries tears of blood has baffled medical experts in the US trying to determine the cause of his condition.
15-year-old Calvino Inman from Tennessee sheds his bright red tears up to three times-a-day, often without warning, though "Sometimes, I can feel it coming up, like a tear. I feel my eyes watering" he stated.
Often there is little pain, but occasionally "Sometimes, it will burn as it comes out", leaving the teen in agony.
The teenager said that occasionally the tears can last up to an hour, leaving streaks of blood running down his face. As a result he has been bullied at his local school and given the nickname of 'Vampire'.
After seeing several specialists and undergoing MRIs, catscans and ultrasounds, the cause of Calvino's tears remains a mystery.
A possibility could be a rare medical condition called Haemoloacria, where a person produces tears which are partially composed of blood. This can manifest as anything from red-tinged tears to those which appear to be entirely blood - though it is usually confined to fertile women and seems to be induced by hormones.
In April, Indian girl Rashida Khatoon was declared a miracle by Hindu holy men for also shedding tears of blood.
