Golf club drug smuggler busted because of her handicap
Smuggler had almost 1kg of cocaine stuffed inside her clubs, but didn't know anything about playing the game...
15 July 2009
A DRUGS smuggler who hid cocaine in a set of golf clubs was caught out when her response to a question about her handicap was to deny she had a disability.
Customs officials became suspicious when they casually asked the woman carrying a full set of golf clubs on to a flight what her golfing handicap was.
Unfortunately Kayti Ella Dryer thought the officials were enquiring if she had a disability and after the question was repeated, she replied that she was in perfect health.
After a few more questions regarding the basics of golf, it became clear that Dryer had no idea how to play the game.
Customs officials then began to inspect her clubs, after noting that there were some unusual outlines within the shafts. After drilling into the clubs and even the structure of her golf bag, they discovered a massive haul of cocaine worth over £80,000.
The jobless 23-year-old, of Lewes, East Sussex, was jailed for four years at Manchester Crown Court after admitting attempted drug smuggling. She had arrived on a flight from Montego Bay, Jamaica, before being arrested by customs officials.
Mike O'Grady, of HM Revenue and Customs, said: "When asked questions about golf, it was clear she was totally unfamiliar with the game and had no legitimate reason for travelling with the sports equipment."
