Devotees to the Chinese shrine of Bang Neow had their tongues and bodies pierced during a street parade of the annual Vegetarian Festival in Phuket island, Thailand.

Some of the implements they pushed through their tongues were huge and look very painful!

The festival has Chinese origins and is held during the ninth lunar month of the Chinese calendar. It involves the beliefs of cleansing the body, ritual piercings involving a spirit medium, and consumption of only vegetarian food as well as making merit.

The festival runs for nine days and involves nine street processions featuring 'devotees' who pierce their bodies with an assortment of weapons and implements.
