A NEW range of trainers made from recycled London Underground trains and bus seat fabric has hit stores in the capital.

The European-made Converse-like designs sell for £60 a pair and are made from material taken from Tube and bus seat covers. The soles are made from 33 per cent  recycled bus tyres and the leather trim is also environmentally friendly -  it's made from old cheque book wallets.

Each new design from the Above + Below London collection is named after the line that supplied the fabric – such as the new release ‘District line’ range.

The limited edition range – which will branch out to include bags -  is the brainchild of Transport firm First Group, who teamed up with TRiP (Transport Recycling in Partnership) to make it happen.

FirstGroup's Sir Moir Lockhead said he was “delighted” to  give a practical use to materials the transport industry has usually thrown into landfill or  had incinerated.

Fashion designer Vivienne Westwood helped during the design process.

The first pair of shoes went on display last year at an exhibition at the London College of Fashion.

TRiP supports organisations such as Love London and Trees for Cities-  and every pair sold will result in a new tree planted.

The shoes are on sale at The Natural Shoe Store in Covent Garden and at London’s Transport Museum.
