Bum deal: Artist gets £20k grant to study female bottoms
Sue Williams gets National Lottery grant to examine 'attitudes towards female buttocks' by making a series of plaster casts of women's backsides
29 June 2009
AN ARTIST is cracking on with her work after being given a £20,000 Lottery grant to examine women’s bottoms.
Kelly Brook and other celebrity bottoms
Sue Williams’ cheeky project is intended to look at attitudes towards female buttocks across different cultures.
She is creating a series of moulds of women’s bottoms, including her own, in an attempt to understand the significance of the backside.
"The buttock-casting always produces a tee-hee response"
Williams said: “The project is taking on the issues around the bottom and how it is viewed in contemporary culture and by the male. For example, it is quite clear the bottom is sacrosanct to the African man and woman.”
But some critics say it’s a bum deal. Adrian Sanders, a Liberal Democrat MP, said: “No doubt there are some people who consider this a good cause, but the majority of people buying lottery tickets are bound to question this.”
A spokesperson for the Arts Council for Wales admits the cash grant will be the butt of a few jokes, but says it is a valid use of the money.
She said: “The buttock-casting always produces a tee-hee response and getting the decision-making panel to get past that was difficult, but there is a serious point here.”
