Hundreds of naked cyclists ride through London
Hundreds of nude Londoners got on their bikes to protest against oil dependency and car culture
15 June 2009
DARING cyclists shed their clothes at the weekend and paraded through London to highlight the damage caused to the planet by car dependency.
Hundreds of naked riders covered in body paint and branded with anti-oil slogans rode into West End, passing the Houses of Parliament.
They were among thousands of people from 40 destinations around the globe who stripped off for the sixth World Naked Bike Ride.
While many chose to bare all, others shielded their modesty with body paint and strategically-placed flowers.
The Metropolitan Police even stopped traffic to allow the cyclists an easy passage through the busy streets.
Amanda Burlington, of Ealing, said: “It’s a great atmosphere and all for a good cause. It’s one of the best events in London.”
"It was great to see people smiling and having fun for a really positive protest, which was about promoting cycling and environmentalism"
Nick Sayers, 36, who was one of the organisers, said: "It was great to see people smiling and having fun for a really positive protest, which was about promoting cycling and environmentalism."
