Andy Murray despatches Juan Carlos Ferrero
Andy Murray of Great Britain, the third seed, has won his Wimbledon quarter-final 7-5 6-3 6-2 against Juan Carlos Ferrero of Spain
1 July 2009
ANDY MURRAY has eased into the Wimbledon semi-finals with a commanding 7-5 6-3 6-2 win over Spain's Juan Carlos Ferrero.
The British No 1 picked his moment perfectly to break in the 12th game of the first set, his court coverage and vicious passing shots causing Ferrero to crumble with a double fault on set point in their quarter-final.
Murray then immediately dropped his serve on the first game of the second set, and looked to be in trouble at 3-1 down, leaving fans on Centre Court fearing another nail-biter like the five-set thriller against Stanislas Wawrinka on Monday.
But the Scot then found his best form, reeling off a string of five games as ex-French Open champion Ferrero collapsed, firing down more double faults on crucial points to hand over the second set.
Murray then showed why he is heavily tipped to become the first British man to win Wimbledon since Fred Perry in 1936 as the No 3 seed broke the former world No 1 twice more in the third set.
The result means Murray will face Andy Roddick in the semi-final scheduled for Friday after the American two-time Wimbledon runner-up beat Australian Lleyton Hewitt in a marathon five-set battle.
