WEST HAM have completed the signing of Portugal defender Manuel Da Costa from Fiorentina in a deal that sees January transfer-flop Savio move in the opposite direction.
Part of the transfer also sees the Hammers recoup some of the £5m forked out for the German under-20 international earlier this year. The club will also retain 50 per cent of Savio’s sell-on value.
West Ham chief Scott Duxbury has described the deal as a brilliant bit of business.
"Had our financial situation been different, we would have preferred to have kept and developed Savio," said the Hammers chief.
"However, we are required to make savings and our policy has always been to sell players on the fringes rather than established first-team players.
"With the fee we received for Savio and 50 per cent sell-on together with acquiring the highly-rated Da Costa, it represented a great deal."
Da Costa, 23, who has also played for PSV Eindhoven and Nancy, has signed a three-year deal at Upton Park.
