Rosicky sends out warning to Arsenal's Euro rivals
Arsenal are in it for the long-haul, says Czech winger following spirited victory in Belgium
17 September 2009
TOMAS ROSICKY has warned the rest of Europe there is more to come from both him and Arsenal this season.
Now fit again following a string of injury setbacks, the Czech winger made his first start since January 2008 in Wednesday night's Champions League Group H opener away to Standard Liege, where the Gunners fought back from going 2-0 down inside five minutes to win with a late strike from Eduardo.
Rosicky believes the manner of the turnaround will have sent a message this young Arsenal side are in it for the long-haul.
"You have to believe in the style we are playing, we did that," said Rosicky, who came on as a substitute during the Barclays Premier League defeat at Manchester City last weekend.
"It is really satisfying when you can turn a match around like this. If you do not believe, you cannot turn a game like this.
"You just have to continue to pass the ball like we always do. We know that inside we are strong enough to turn games like this, and that is what we proved in Liege."
Rosicky added: "We knew that after the two defeats in Manchester, we needed a result. The performance in Liege will help with the confidence."
The Czech midfielder has endured a frustrating 18 months on the sidelines, progress hampered by complications to his initial hamstring problem and then suffering another slight strain after he returned to action in pre-season.
However, Rosicky, a £8million signing from Borussia Dortmund in May 2006, is now "fired up" to have an impact.
"I am not anywhere near my best, and still have plenty of room to improve. I will get better," he said.
"I am fired up to win a trophy and enjoying being back. It is good that I can be part of this team back again.
"The boss as another option with me in the creative part of the game and he still has [Samir] Nasri to come back. Offensively we are very strong and I can help with that."
Arsenal captain Cesc Fabregas, meanwhile, feels he paid the price for being too honest after being caught in the face by Eliaquim Mangala as the defender lined up to shoot Standard's opening goal.
"Maybe I am very small and they are very big, but they always catch me on the face," the Spain midfielder said.
"But if you go down, they say that you cheat so you try to be nice and stay on your feet.
"However, after you get caught they score a goal. I guess sometimes this happens in football."
Gunners boss Arsene Wenger feels the victory will have "strengthened the belief" within the Arsenal camp following what has been a difficult few weeks, in the wake of successive domestic defeats and Eduardo's European ban for diving which was overturned on appeal.
There is little respite for the Gunners, though, as Wigan visit Emirates Stadium on Saturday before another home game against West Brom in the Carling Cup, when 18-year-old forward Sanchez Watt, on the bench in Liege, looks set to feature in a youthful Arsenal XI.
Fabregas said: "Now let us focus on Wigan because the Premier League is the most important thing for Arsenal.
"When we play every three days, it is always like a final for Arsenal who want to be at the top.
"It is just one more game and the season has just started so we have a lot of time to recover."
Arsenal could have forward Robin van Persie (knee) and goalkeeper Manuel Almunia (virus) back against the Latics after neither travelled to Belgium.
Wenger confirmed van Persie was in line for a return to action on Saturday.
Although midfielder Andrey Arshavin has a "10% chance" of featuring against the Latics, having aggravated a groin problem during the international break, goalkeeper Almunia continues to be troubled by a chest infection.
"Robin van Persie is the most likely to come back [for Saturday]," Wenger told Arsenal TV Online.
"But Denilson looks to be out for a few weeks with a back problem."
