Michael Owen is on the verge of joining Manchester United

Former Newcastle United, Liverpool and Real Madrid striker will join Premier League champions if he passes his Old Trafford medical

MICHAEL OWEN is set for a sensational move to Premier League champions Manchester United.

According to reports the former Liverpool and Real Madrid star could complete the switch by Friday afternoon if he passes a medical.

Owen is a free agent after his contract with relegated Newcastle United expired on 1 July, so United will not have to pay a fee for the 29-year-old.

It is expected that United boss Sir Alex Ferguson will sign England’s fourth leading goalscorer of all time on a pay-as-you play basis.

Owen’s move to the champions has taken the Premier League by complete surprise, after it was reported that minnows Stoke City and Hull City were leading the chase to sign the striker.

However, they now appear to have been joined by United, who have seen forwards Cristiano Ronaldo and Carlos Tevez both leave Old Trafford since the end of last season.

The forward, who has scored 40 goals in 89 England appearances, has yet to persuade Three Lions coach Fabio Capello he has a future at international level.

But Owen's career could be rejuvenated by playing alongside the likes of England striker Wayne Rooney at Old Trafford.

United have yet to make a public comment about the proposed deal.
