John Terry says Chelsea need to get title bid back on track by beating Newcastle

2 April 2009

FRESH from scoring England’s late winner against Ukraine, John Terry has turned his attention to Chelsea’s upcoming game with Newcastle by saying he is out to ruin Alan Shearer’s big day.

The former England striker takes charge of the Tyneside club for the first time this weekend and Terry reckons it is going to give the relegation-battlers a huge boost.

But the Chelsea skipper says The Blues are happy to play the role of the party poopers if it means getting their title run back on track.

He said: “Alan Shearer is Newcastle through and through and him taking over as the manager for now is going to give them a massive lift.

"But it is down to us to go there, show what we are capable of, which we have been doing a lot of the time recently, and get a result.

The defender added: "The title race is still not over for us and we will be going there to hopefully upset him [Shearer] in his first game in charge."

Terry’s sentiments were echoed by his club teammate Frank Lampard.

The England midfielder is a huge admirer of Shearer who scored 30 goals for his country and over 200 for Newcastle.

And Lampard reckons it is that sort of record that will evoke a massive response from the Newcastle faithful.

The Blues’ midfielder said: "The game at the weekend will be a lot harder for us now that Alan Shearer has taken over for the time being at Newcastle.

"You can imagine what the atmosphere is going to be like up there. Alan Shearer is regarded as a God up there with the fans - and quite rightly so after what he achieved for the club.

Lampard added: "He will definitely get the Newcastle fans going and he will get the Newcastle players going.

"But we have to react to the atmosphere and we have to try and get a result to put us back on track after the Tottenham game."
