Arsenal midfielder Abou Diaby vows to forget Old Trafford nightmare
Frenchman dumbfounded by hapless own goal, which handed victory to Premier League champions Manchester United
2 September 2009
ABOU DIABY has vowed to put his Old Trafford nightmare behind him and help fire the Gunners to glory this season.
The France midfielder haplessly diverted Ryan Giggs free kick into his own net to gift Manchester United a 2-1 victory on Saturday.
It was a miserable moment for Diaby and Arsenal, who saw a comfortable 1-0 lead turn sour in a matter of minutes, after Wayne Rooney won and converted a penalty moments earlier.
"I have to forget it. I made a silly mistake and it's difficult to explain what happened,” the 23-year-old said.
"The goalkeeper called out to me to leave the ball, but it's all my fault.
"Even when I look back at the images I ask myself what happened, and I tell myself that it's just not possible.”
Diaby had the chance to redeem for his error moments later, but miscued his shot when he was through on United’s goal.
"I was so wound up and soon after I rushed my shot because I didn't apply myself properly,” he added.
But the Frenchman is adamant it can still be the Gunners’ season, despite the early-season loss to one of their closest rivals.
"It could be the right year for Arsenal,” Diaby
