Transport for London (TfL) staff are storing thousands of bottles so they are quickly accessible to passengers amid fears that temperatures could soar to 45C underground.

Above ground, temperatures are set to hit 32C in the capital today, the hottest day since July 2006, with predictions it could rise to 33C on Thursday. It means London will be warmer than the Greek islands, where the temperature is 29C and Barcelona, where it is 28C.

The Met Office is also set to raise its Heatwave Plan to Level 3, meaning hospitals, care homes and social services have to take action to protect the vulnerable young and old.

Helen Chivers, a forecaster for the Met Office, said thundery showers could arrive later on Thursday, but should be gone by the next morning.

"At the weekend temperatures will drop to 26C but it will still feel warm and sticky," she said.
