Woman teacher arrested on suspicion of sexual assault in Barbican school

A WOMAN teacher at a prestigious private school in the Barbican has been arrested over claims that she sexually assaulted a female pupil.
The 26-year-old teacher, who works at the City of London School for Girls, is accused of having had an “inappropriate” relationship with the girl, who is under 16. She was arrested on Monday on suspicion of sexual assault and has been suspended from teaching while the police investigation is under way.
A spokesman for the City of London Corporation, which owns the £13,000-a-year school, said: “A member of staff has been arrested following an investigation by police into an allegation of an inappropriate relationship with one of our students.”

In a letter on the school’s website, headmistress Diana Vernon told parents: “The school takes its responsibility for the safeguarding of our children extremely seriously.
“We were proactive in reporting this allegation and have since been co-operating fully with the police and authorities. As always, the well-being of our students is our paramount concern.”
Former pupils at the school include pop star Dido and TV presenter Claudia Winkleman. It was founded in 1881 and has 700 pupils. Last year it was rated among the top 10 independent schools in the country, and in 2005 it came first in The Sunday Times table of prep schools.
A City of London Police spokeswoman said: “A 26-year-old woman from South London was arrested on July 20 on suspicion of sexual assault on a child. She has since been bailed and inquiries continue.”
