Wimbledon security staff on the look-out for 30 crazed fans

Security stepped up for stars including Maria Sharapova and Venus and Serena Williams as stalkers make their way to SW19

23 June 2009

SECURITY chiefs at Wimbledon have been warned that as many as 30 stalkers may be trying to target some of the world’s top tennis players over the next fortnight.

Detectives are most concerned for ace women’s player Maria Sharapova, who has at least two private bodyguards with her at all times.

The 22-year-old Russian is being stalked by a man known as 'The Professor'.

Also being monitored are Venus and Serena Williams, who are known to have what the police refer to as "fixated individuals" tracking them.

In 2002, a man claiming to be a drug-testing official tried to get into the house where Venus was staying with her sister in Wimbledon.

Police officers are also on the watch for specific 'fans' who follow tennis stars around the world.

"Players’ safety is our top priority and, as well as police and groundstaff, some players have extra support in the form of bodyguards. They know who it is they are looking for"

A Wimbledon official said: "Players’ safety is our top priority and, as well as police and groundstaff, some players have extra support in the form of bodyguards. They know who it is they are looking for."

There are security barriers around the All England Club and officers are also watching out for protesters from groups such as Fathers 4 Justice.
