Wembley flat struck by lightning in London storms
Capital battered by thunderstorms and rain as sunny weather comes to an abrupt halt
8 June 2009
A BLOCK of flats burst into flames after being struck by lightning as torrential storms hit London.
Residents had to be evacuated from an apartment block in Wembley after lightning set the building ablaze.
Firefighters were called to the three-storey block in Barnhill Road just after 7am on Sunday to find half the roof on fire.
Despite the flats suffering extensive damage, no one was injured.
In the amazing deluge the capital saw three weeks worth of rain fall in a couple of hours on Sunday morning as the sizzling start to summer ended in spectacular fashion.
And the bad news is there's more to come.
The Met Office said the violent storms were the result of cold air from the north clashing with a warm weather system coming over from the Continent.
Forecaster Andrew Sibley warned further deluges were on the way over the next few days.
He said: “There’s a chance of heavy showers developing tonight and returning over tomorrow and Wednesday.
“But it won’t be as severe as the weather we saw at the weekend. It won’t be a complete washout.”
Temperatures should hover between 14C and 18C over the next few days – a far cry from the heat wave of a week ago.
