Two staff at Buckingham Palace have swine flu
Members of the royal household at Buckingham Palace taken ill - another believed to have the H1N1 virus at Windsor Castle
27 July 2009
TWO staff at Buckingham Palace have caught swine flu, according to reports.
The pair of royal household members are said to be recovering at home. There is also a third reported case of the virus at Windsor Castle.
The NHS launched its swine flu helpline last week to cope with the increased numbers of people contracting the illness.
More than 100,000 people are estimated to have caught the bug in the UK in the past week alone, with at least 30 people in total dying after contracting the virus.
A number of newspapers have claimed that two Buckingham Palace employees have been taken ill, and that someone associated with Windsor Castle's St George's Chapel has also come down with the illness.
A Palace spokesman would not confirm the reported cases, but said: "As a large and diverse organisation, employing more than 1,000 personnel in a number of locations, we accept there are likely to be cases of suspected swine flu.
"Managers have been briefed to take sensible precautions."
Last week the Duke of York postponed a visit to a factory in Staffordshire after staff at the plant were struck down with suspected swine flu.
A Clarence House spokeswoman, commenting on the arrangements for the Prince of Wales's household, said: "We have a long-standing pandemic flu policy, which has been tailored for the swine flu strain.
"We are constantly reviewing the arrangements we have in place, in line with Government guidance. We are working closely with Buckingham Palace and are taking the current swine flu outbreak seriously."
