Swarms of wasps to descend on London
Hopes of a 'dry, hot summer' have already been dampened by July downpours - but now there is more bad news as swarms of wasps are due to plague the capital
28 July 2009
THE dismal summer weather may be the least of your worries this week - experts say an invasion of wasps is on the way.
The last days of July are when huge numbers of nuisance nests appear across London, and pest controllers are warning people to take care.
Research from one insurance firm found claims for hornet and wasp attacks doubled at this time of year compared to the average.
Jon Florsheim, of insurer HomeServe, said: "It is not unusual for nests to be situated inside sheds or close to well-used entrances, in which case they can become particularly troublesome."
It came as forecasters warned the much hyped "barbecue summer" may already have passed us by.

The Met Office predicted in May that London was in for a hot, dry summer with temperatures topping 30C and below-average rainfall.
But Paul Mott, from MeteoGroup, said: "We may already have had the barbecue summer. It could have come during the Wimbledon fortnight when there were many very hot days.
"It was a long range forecast produced by the Met Office. Perhaps it was a bit misleading."
The latest figures show that nearly a month’s worth of rain fell in the first two weeks of July alone.
But rainfall was still far lower than the previous two years.
This week, the capital is in store for mainly fine weather.
However, tomorrow’s sunshine and warm 22C highs will be replaced by heavy downpours in the evening.
After more sunshine on Thursday and Friday, the weather will to turn nasty - just in time for the weekend.
