Sagem mobile phone stolen by muggers returned to owner for being too cheap
24 April 2009
SNOBBISH robbers gave a man back his phone after declaring it was too cheap to bother stealing.
A group of youths attacked Migui Rowlands and rifled through his pockets during a terrifying street robbery.
They stole the 44-year-old's wallet which contained £30, but when they discovered his £9.99 Sagem phone, they said it was impossible to sell it and handed it back before running off.
He said: “I was surrounded by a gang of youths and two cut me off on their bikes and then they started going through my pockets.
"They took my wallet and stole about £30. But when they looked at my phone they gave it back.
“They told me: ‘we can’t do anything with that’. It is just one of these cheap jobs.
“In some ways I was pleased because it had all my numbers on it.”
The robbery, which occurred in Alton Road, Croydon, on 9 April, left Rowlands glad he had not splashed out on a more expensive model such as a £350 3G iPhone.
The Sagem MY220X is one of the cheapest phones available and boasts few features, with the most appealing one being its slim design.
However, reviewers have given it the thumbs-up based on price, with one describing it as a "respectable handset that does what little it does well".
