Thunderstorms and rain predicted for Glastonbury festival
Weather forecasters predict thunderstorms and torrential rain during performances by Bruce Springsteen, Lily Allen and Neil Young at Glastonbury festival this weekend
24 June 2009
REVELLERS gearing up for Glastonbury festival should brace themselves for "torrential thunderstorms" predicted by forecasters this weekend.
Michael Eavis opens the doors of his 900-acre home in Somerset on Wednesday as thousands arrive early for Glastonbury , a music and performing arts extravaganza.
But Meteogroup warned that the early sunshine could soon give way to bursts of heavy rain liable to turn the site "very muddy".
Forecaster Rachel Vince said: "Wednesday is not looking too bad at all with lots of glorious sunshine. There will be only a light breeze so pitching tents shouldn't be a problem.
"Thursday should be generally dry with sunny periods although there is a threat of thundery showers which can't be ruled out. The temperature will be around 22 degrees centigrade."
But over the following days, fans could get very wet while watching headline acts like Lily Allen, Neil Young, and Bruce Springsteen perform.
"Glastonbury could be in the line of fire from thundery showers"
Vince said: "On Friday and Saturday, Glastonbury could be in the line of fire from thundery showers.
"It could be torrential thunderstorms at times although there should also be periods of sun between the showers.
"It will still be warm with highs of 23 degrees centigrade on Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
A reformed Blur, who are headlining at Glastonbury on Sunday may fare better with "less severe" showers.
In 2005, storms and flash flooding caused havoc at the Glastonbury site, with many festival-goers having to use their tents as makeshift boats to float around waterlogged areas.
In 2007, more rain caused a similar mud bath, though a new draining system meant a repeat of 2005 was avoided.
