SIR PAUL STEPHENSON has branded a graffiti attack on a memorial to the victims of the 7 July bombings in Hyde Park as "appalling".
The Scotland Yard boss said an inquiry continues into catching those behind the vandalism in central London.
Speaking at City Hall, he said the graffiti came as a deep shock to all those who had attended a moving ceremony to unveil the memorial two weeks ago.
He said: "I attended a very moving ceremony in Hyde Park in memory to the victims. It saddened all of us that shortly after that there was graffiti done to that memorial. I am sure everyone will join me in saying what an appalling thing that is.
"I am sure everyone will join me in saying what an appalling thing that is. We have a memorial to 52 victims that have been murdered"
We have a memorial to 52 victims that have been murdered. Shortly after it has been unveiled by the Prince of Wales there is this shocking event. The parks police are investigating it but it is something to be deplored."
Police said a small number of words were written with a black marker pen on one of the 52 steel pillars that make up the monument last weekend.
The defaced pillar bore the inscription "Kings Cross - 8.50 - 7th July 2005." Staff have since removed the marks.
Grieving relatives of those killed in the rucksack bomb attacks on the three Tube trains and a bus condemned the vandalism as outrageous.
Ferguson said he was also conscious of the anniversary yesterday of the "tragic death" of Jean Charles de Menezes, shot dead by police who mistook him for a suicide bomber in Stockwell.
