Mayor Boris Johnson launches “pay as you flow” scheme on River Thames
6 April 2009
A “PAY as you flow” scheme that allows river commuters to use their Oyster Cards has been launched by Boris Johnson.
The move comes as part of the Mayor’s election pledge for a 'revolution' on the waterways.
A new service running between London Bridge and Canary Wharf - with boats every ten minutes - will also be set up under the scheme in a move to get more people to 'sail' to work.
Ticket prices will fall from £5 to £3.30 for a single journey from any of the eight piers serving central London.
Johnson said: “With the right mixture of investment and imagination, river services can become a truly integral, as well as an extremely pleasant, part of the capital’s transport network.
“Oysterising the Thames as well as providing clearer signage to the piers and services available will make it much easier for Londoners to travel on the river.”
