'Cows' get on bikes to highlight cattle plight
London's Sunday drivers were joined by 'cows' on bikes, a stunt by animal welfare campaigners to highlight the plight of Britain's dairy cattle
26 July 2009
LONDON drivers were surprised to find themselves sharing roads with a herd of bicycle-riding cows.
But the bovine invaders of central London's cycle lanes were not farmyard escapees, but cow-suit clad animal welfare campaigners.
The 30 riders from the Lotus Trust travelled from Trafalgar Square through Knightsbridge, Westminster and Victoria to raise awareness of the welfare of Britain's diary cattle.
The Lotus Trust want to end intensive farming of the animals and say that all cows should be given free access to outdoor grazing and space to roam.
They also want to see an end to intensive breeding in order to encourage heifers to produce milk.
Lotus Trust spokesman Sanjay Tanna said: "We are saying to the public: let's take the first step to improving cow welfare by drinking organic milk."
