Last week, the Government launched the £5m second phase of its Tackling Knives Action Programme after Home Office figures revealed the high-profile campaign to cut the number of fatal stabbings had failed.

In the year since the start of the programme in July 2008, the number of teenagers stabbed to death in big English cities was 23, the same figure as the previous year. The number of adults over the age of 20 who died as a result of knife crime increased by seven to 103.

The second phase of TKAP will tackle all forms of serious violence, including gun crime and gang culture among 13 to 24-year-olds.
