Michelle Obama takes Sasha and Malia on London sightseeing tour

First Lady Michelle Obama flies in to London with daughters Sasha and Malia for fish-and-chip supper at Mayfair pub The Audley, and checks out Big Ben

9 June 2009

AFTER a presidential tour of France, there’s nothing like popping across to England for some good old-fashioned fish and chips.

With her official trip to our nearest neighbours over, First Lady Michelle Obama couldn’t resist coming to London.

She plainly had such a good time during the G20 summit in April that she decided to show the city to her daughters, Malia, 10, and Sasha, eight.

Looking her usual glamorous self in a black and white dress with a blue cardigan, she could have had her pick of the gastronomic delights of our capital. But in typically homely style, she chose mid-market for the family night out, arriving at The Audley, a Victorian watering hole in Mount Street, Mayfair, at about 7pm

The First Lady, 45, opted for a £12 steak; the girls went for fish and chips, on the menu at £9.80. For starters they had a hot cheese platter, washed down with Pepsi.

Mrs Obama, 45, had some wine with her entourage of assistants and secret service agents, who ate mainly burgers at the 15-seat window table in a private room upstairs. Drinkers hung around outside going about their normal business, completely unaware of the VIP guests just a few feet above them.

The bill came to £200, and a very healthy tip was left.

“We had no idea it was going to be them,” said waitress Cintia Pinto, 24, who served the party, adding: “We were speechless when they walked in. I couldn’t believe it. They were all very friendly.

“They made us feel calm. The girls were so sweet and polite. They thanked us every time we brought them something. It was a real honour.”

The girls flew into Stansted Airport from France early yesterday morning. During their unofficial visit, Malia and Sasha were treated to a sightseeing tour of landmarks such as Big Ben, before shopping at Harrods. The Harry Potter fans then went to Pinewood Studios in Buckinghamshire to see the set of their favourite films.

Mrs Obama also popped in to No 10 for a chat and some afternoon tea with Gordon Brown’s wife Sarah.
