Cool Tube trains at last

THIS is the first glimpse of the revolutionary air-conditioned Tube carriages that could spell an end to sweaty journeys. The new trains – unveiled today by Mayor Boris Johnson – come into service in 2010 and will eventually operate on 40 per cent of the network.
They boast air-cooling systems, CCTV in every carriage and improved accessibility. The trains, with walk-through carriages, will serve the Metropolitan line from 2010 and the Circle, District and Hammersmith & City lines from 2011. Johnson said: “London is the coolest city on the planet and now we’re getting the coolest trains, too.
“After decades spent sweltering in tropical conditions, in just two years’ time Londoners on the sub-surface lines will be able to use the first of these superb trains.
“Rather than arriving at destinations drenched, we hope passengers will emerge cool as cucumbers and ready to enjoy all the capital offers.”
A mock-up of the trains will be on display at Euston Square Gardens from 26 September to 2 October.
Peter Hendy, Transport for London commissioner, said: “The new air-conditioned trains are part of vital upgrade works that will transform the oldest lines on the Tube network.
“When works are completed, passengers will see faster, more reliable journeys and more trains per hour.”
