A MURDER hunt was under way today after a man died in a shooting in Luton.
The 22-year-old was found with head injuries just before 9pm yesterday lying on a pavement in Haymarket Road, a residential part of the Bedfordshire town.
He was taken to Luton and Dunstable Hospital but doctors were unable to save him and he died. A post-mortem examination will be carried out today.
Officers had been alerted following reports of a gunshot in the area.
Bedfordshire Police said the area had been cordoned off while forensic experts carried out a fingertip search.
Officers had also stepped up patrols in the area to reassure the public, a force spokesman said.
Detective Superintendent Mick Hanlon of Beds and Herts Major Crime Unit is leading the murder hunt.
Officers said they were "keeping an open mind" over the motive for the killing.
Anyone with information should call police on 01234 841212 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
