A clubber shot dead in a "gangster-style" execution on a night out with friends has become the 90th person to be murdered in the capital this year.
The 35-year-old victim was blasted up to six times with a machinegun as he stood outside Club Red, near Limehouse DLR station, in east London yesterday morning.
Barmen and medics desperately tried to save the man’s life, but he was pronounced dead at the scene at about 4am.
Witnesses said the gunman drove up in a car and calmly pulled the gun from the boot.
One added: "Then he went over and shot this other man. It was terrifying, like something from a gangster film."
The shooting sparked hysterical scenes inside the club as hundreds of revellers were locked in by staff.
One clubber said several fights broke out and a glass table in the VIP area was smashed.
Both the victim and the gunman are black. Detectives from Operation Trident are investigating the murder.
Police are still trying to work out the identity of the victim, but believe he came from west London.
They were today questioning a man in his 20s who handed himself in last night at a south London police station.
A spokeswoman for club promoters Fordshouse was adamant the victim had not been inside the club before the shooting.
Club Red, which was only granted a license in January, was hosting a "funky soulful house" music night at the time of the shooting.
It is one of several round-the-clock clubs situated in a former warehouse on Cable Street, including a "fetish dungeon" called The Whipping House.
One posting on a clubbers' internet forum said: "The whole building (which seems to contain about three separate clubs) oozed bad, gangster vibes."
