London slated as 'dirtiest and most expensive city in Europe', according to poll

Travellers say London pubs and restaurants also dish up the worst cuisine

4 May 2009

LONDON is the filthiest city in Europe for the second consecutive year, according to a poll of travellers.

If that was not bad enough, the capital was also slated for dishing up the most stomach-churning cuisine that pulls on the purse-strings the most.

It seems Londoners' dress sense is not to be desired either - having been branded the worst-dressed locals in a survey of 2,376 European travellers by the company TripAdvisor.

Although it's also considered to have the most tourist traps, the city did win some of the poll's categories.

You can find the best free attractions, easily the best public parks and the best nightlife in the multi-cultural city, home to 7.5 million.

The UK capital took the unwanted accolade by a huge margin, with 36 per cent reckoning London was the dirtiest - well ahead of Paris in second place with 9 per cent.

As many as 50 per cent of those polled rated London best for public parks, with Paris a distant second with just 7 per cent.

One traveller writing a review on the TripAdvisor site said: "I have travelled quite a lot and there are NO parks in the world like the ones in London, especially St James's Park."

The cleanest city was considered to be Copenhagen, the best bargain city Prague, the friendliest Dublin, while the most boring was Brussels.

Paris had the best-dressed locals and the best cuisine, but was easily the least-friendly city and also the most over-rated.

The French capital lost out to Venice as the most romantic city, while Warsaw had the ugliest architecture.

The Polish city of Krakow was considered to be the most under-rated, followed by Bruges and Edinburgh.

TripAdvisor spokesman Luke Fredberg said: "Europe's capital cities all have their highs and lows, but no other continent offers travellers such a wealth of culture and sights within such short distances.

"Despite London emerging as the dirtiest and most expensive city, its fantastic free attractions prove that you don't need to be a millionaire in order to enjoy the capital."
