Ken Livingstone was today accused of snubbing Londoners after refusing to face questions over his controversial race adviser.

Lee Jasper dramatically resigned yesterday after it was revealed that he had sent sexually charged emails to a woman who he helped gain £100,000 in City Hall grants for projects she was running.

He had been due to face a grilling by the London Assembly today over controversial payments totalling £3.8m. The Assembly called on Livingstone to answer questions over the fiasco but he refused. He continued to back Jasper, 49, saying he would like to re-employ him.

Tory mayoral candidate Boris Johnson said: “This is a major snub to Londoners who deserve to know how their hard-earned cash is being spent. This shows how arrogant and out of touch this mayor has become.” And his Liberal Democrat challenger Brian Paddick said: “Londoners deserve answers to these very serious questions."

Father-of-nine Jasper resigned after a string of sexy emails to Karen Chouhan, 50, in which he said he wanted to “honey-glase”  [sic]  her.

Two organisations that Chouhan was running – the 1990 Trust and the Black Londoners Forum –received grants. But she dismissed the emails as banter and denied any wrongdoing.

The controversy reached Parliament today when David Cameron asked the Prime Minister about Lee Jasper’s “friends and cronies”. Gordon Brown said it was a “matter for police”.

Today at his family home in Clapham, south London, Jasper at first refused to answer his door, saying he was “spending the day with my family”. But minutes later he walked out of his house and  was asked by reporters if he was having a bad day. He said: “A broken fridge can be considered a meltdown.”

The Mayor was unavailable for comment today.
