Jury still out as trial of 7/7 suicide bombers' alleged co-conspirators continues
27 April 2009
THE jury is still out in the trial of three men accused of helping plan the 7/7 suicide bomb attacks.
Waheed Ali, Mohammed Shakil and Sadeer Saleem allegedly visited the Natural History Museum, the London Aquarium and the London Eye in a two-day reconnaissance mission seven months before the attacks in July 2005 to identify potential targets.
The trio, all from Beeston in Leeds, deny conspiring with the four 7 July bombers and others unknown to cause explosions between November 17, 2004 and July 8, 2005.
The jury began its deliberations last Friday following a three-month retrial at Kingston Crown Court, south-west London.
The four suicide bombers killed 52 people and injured hundreds more when they detonated rucksack devices packed with explosives on three Tube trains and a bus.
The jury heard that Ali, 25, Saleem, 28, and Shakil, 32, travelled from Leeds to London with bomber Hasib Hussain on December 16 2004. They allegedly met another of the bombers, Germaine Lindsay, in the capital.
For a period of two days they conducted a "hostile reconnaissance" of potential targets, it is alleged.
The three defendants admitted making the trip but claimed it was an entirely innocent "social outing" and the purpose was for Ali to visit his sister.
Ali and Shakil also deny a second charge of conspiracy to attend a place used for terrorist training.
It is alleged they were planning a trip to Pakistan to attend a training camp when they were arrested by police in March 2007.
But Shakil and Ali insist their intended visit was for religious reasons, not those specified in the charge.
