Holloway Road is London's most dug-up street

16 April 2009

HOLLOWAY ROAD was today named and shamed as London’s most dug-up street.

The north London highway – just around the corner from Boris Johnson’s home – was crippled by roadworks 500 times in the past 12 months.

Utility companies who failed to co-ordinate their works were blamed for the upheaval. Other blighted areas included Cannon Street, which was dug up 70 times, causing chaos in the City.

The Transport for London (TfL) figures show 300,000 sets of roadworks appeared in the capital in the past year.

The report came as the Mayor launched a crackdown on the bungling utility companies.

"The simply incredible situation of their being allowed to dig up any road in the capital with little notice and even less co-ordination must now end"

From today, the firms – including Thames Water, BT and gas and electricity companies – have pledged to finish work on time and use the same holes for repairs.

Under the new Capital Code, they will have to work around the clock if they are falling behind.

And if Londoners think workers are slacking, they can report the companies to a TfL “enforcement squad”.

Johnson said: “The simply incredible situation of their being allowed to dig up any road in the capital with little notice and even less co-ordination must now end.”

As part of the deal, Thames Water will cover hundreds of trenches as it carries out its huge programme to replace Victorian water mains.
