Lonely Planet guide hails north London 'burb as the ultimate city-meets-country break

21 May 2009

IT'S every traveller's ultimate guidebook, charting hotspots across the globe from Argentina to Zanzibar.

But the Lonely Planet's latest must-go is a little closer to home - namely, Hampstead.

A special 'staycations' issue of the travel guide's monthly magazine singles out the north London 'burb as one of the top destinations for British holidays.

Nestling alongside the likes of Cornwall, the Lake Distrct and Devon, Hampstead is hailed as the ultimate city-meets-country break.

Top tips include grabbing a picnic from Rosslyn Deli on Rosslyn Hill and heading for the "sprawling woodlands and meadows" of Hampstead Heath.

"To cool down," it adds, "plunge into the chill waters of one of its three swimming pools" before heading off to eat at the historic 16th century Spaniards Inn.

Hampstead Village Guesthouse, at £95 per night, is the Lonely Planet's favourite place to stay: "It's eclectic, cluttered and thoroughly charming."
