ONE of London’s most famous fish and chip restaurants has been wrecked by fire.
More than 40 firefighters battled the huge blaze at the Sea Shell in Lisson Grove, Marylebone, yesterday.
Some two dozen diners were evacuated from the premises before firefighters arrived at about 5.35pm.
The Sea Shell had a great reputation with celebrities. It is located near many hotels and some of London’s most famous landmarks, including
Madame Tussauds, Abbey Road and London Zoo in Regent’s Park.
"The front of the shop is badly blackened and there was lots of smoke"
Comedian Ruby Wax, promoter David Gest and singer Liza Minnelli were spotted dining at the restaurant this month.
The Sea Shell was named one of Britain’s top 50 restaurants for fish and chips earlier this year.
John McManus, a BBC producer, was at the scene. He said: “The front of the shop is badly blackened and there was lots of smoke.
“Lots of people were standing around watching.”
A fire brigade spokeswoman said an investigation was under way into the cause of the blaze.
She added that half of the ground floor was destroyed. No one was reported hurt.
