MORE than 100 firefighters are battling a huge blaze which ripped through a school in Hoxton.

Fire crews were called to the Thomas Fairchild School, on Napier Grove, just before 2pm.

The 100 firefighters, using 20 fire engines, are struggling to contain the blaze.

The basement, ground floor, first floor and second floor are in flames.

Police have sealed off the area and thick smoke can be seen pouring from the building.

Firefighters from stations including Kingsland, Stoke Newington, Euston, Clerkenwell, Dowgate, Islington, Holloway, Shoreditch, Shadwell and Bow are at the scene.

A spokesman for the London Fire Brigade said that the cause of the fire has not yet been determined.

There are no reports of any injuries. It is believed that the school was empty for the summer holidays.

Stephen Kench, who lives near the school, said: "I just can see really thick smoke and I have shut my windows because it's really acrid.

"Because it is so windy it's going against the fire brigade's needs at the moment.

"Over the last two and a half hours there has been nothing but sirens"

According to witnesses the street has filled with smoke, and the fire can be seen from the nearby City Road.
