Unemployed father and son Anthony and Lee Cooper will face Croydon Magistrate's Court charged with murder following the machete stabbing of David Stevenson at the New Inn beer garden in Sutton
13 August 2009
A FATHER and son will appear in court today charged with murder after a man was stabbed to death with a machete in a Sutton pub's beer garden.
Father-of two David Stevenson, 28, lay bleeding at the south London pub New Inn on Sunday and later died in hospital.
Anthony Cooper, 56, and his son Lee Cooper, 25, who are both unemployed and live in Typhoon Way, Roundshaw, Wallington, south London, will appear at Croydon Magistrates' Court today.
A third man, aged 20, was bailed last night to return to a south London police station at a later date, Scotland Yard said.
Stevenson, a scaffolder, of Brambledown Close, Sutton, had been drinking with friends after watching Chelsea play Manchester United in the Community Shield.
He was taken to St Helier Hospital where he underwent emergency surgery, but he died an hour later.
A post-mortem examination took place at St Helier Hospital on Monday and gave the cause of death as a stab wound.
The victim's father, retired firefighter Roger Stevenson, 54, described his son as a "loveable rogue".
Stevenson told the Sutton Guardian: "He was loved by lots of people. He was a very popular man. He was everybody's friend. He was always laughing."
"Obviously, I will miss him. He's a part of me. He's gone and he isn't going to come back"
His twin brother, Ricky Stevenson, 28, told the paper: "Obviously, I will miss him. He's a part of me. He's gone and he isn't going to come back."
