The pervert is behind up to 29 assaults on schoolgirls in Enfield, Waltham Forest, Barnet and Redbridge. Police say he tries to lift his victims' skirts and touch their legs before apologising and running off

AN image of a sex pest who has carried out up to 29 assaults on schoolgirls in east and north east London has been released by detectives.

The pervert has struck repeatedly in Enfield, Waltham Forest, Barnet and Redbridge in the last year.

Investigators have linked 24 attacks and suspect the man may be behind a further five incidents.

He targets teenage girls wearing uniform as they make their way to schools.

Police said he approaches victims from behind, tries to lift their skirts and, in some cases, touches their legs before running off.

They added that he often apologises to the girls, the youngest of whom was 12 and the oldest 18. The majority of victims were aged between 13 and 15.

The suspect was described as white, aged 30 years or older, of slim to medium build, and possibly with blue eyes. On several occasions he wore a black woolly hat.

Detective Inspector Caroline Haines, who is leading the inquiry, said the man may target summer events for teenage pupils and teachers have been warned.

She said: "We have a new e-fit and appeal to anyone who thinks that they might recognise this man to contact us as soon as possible. I would also appeal directly to the suspect and urge him to contact us.

"While there appears to have been a break in offending over the school holidays, we would still advise vigilance, particularly around youth summer activities and events such as school youth groups.

"These incidents are clearly of concern and very distressing for the victims involved, but thankfully none of the offences has resulted so far in any injury.

"There is no evidence to suggest any particular schoolchildren are being targeted, but as a precaution we have made contact with all schools across the affected boroughs to inform them of the incidents.

"If any parent or guardian has concerns, we would encourage them to contact their safer schools officers. Anyone who believes that they have been a victim should contact the investigation team."

The first assault took place in Barnet on June 23 last year and police have since traced attacks in Enfield (10), Waltham Forest (three), Barnet (nine) and Redbridge (two).

They are also investigating a further five alleged assaults reported in the Enfield and Barnet areas.

Officers based at Enfield's Sapphire Unit, which specialises in sex crimes, are responsible for the inquiry. Two men have been arrested and released.

Anyone with information is asked to call 0208 345 4313 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
