Counter-terrorism police delete Austrian tourist's bus and Tube snaps
17 April 2009
AN Austrian tourist had his holiday snaps of London deleted after police feared he might be a terrorist, it was claimed today.
Klaus Matzka, 69, from Vienna, took pictures of Vauxhall tube station and buses in Walthamstow during a recent visit to the UK.
But he said they were removed from his camera by two officers, who said that under terrorism laws photographing anything to do with transport was "strictly forbidden".
The officers, also took the passport details and hotel addresses of Matzka and his son Loris, 15.
Matzka, a retired television cameraman, said: "I understand the need for some sensitivity in an era of terrorism, but isn't it naive to think terrorism can be prevented by terrorising tourists?
"I've never had these experiences anywhere, never in the world, not even in Communist countries."
He added that he would not be returning to London.
A Met police spokesman said it was not their intention to stop tourists taking photos and they were looking into Matzka's allegations.
