Coldstream Guards film music video in Whitehall

Onlookers watched the Coldstream Guards record a video for The Great Escape at London’s historic Horse Guards Parade

4 August 2009

THE Guards turned into music stars for the day as they recorded their first music video.

The UK's longest-serving military band, the Regimental Band of the Coldstream Guards, drew admiring crowds as they filmed at London's historic Horse Guards Parade in Whitehall.

The band signed a £1million record deal with Decca, part of Universal Music, in June.

They were shooting a video for The Great Escape to coincide with the release of their album Heroes.

Onlookers filled the parade ground and needed to be held back by makeshift barriers.

The shoot had to be stopped at one point due to the volume of tourists surging forward for a glimpse of the action.

The guards joined a roster of young artists on Universal Music's books, including Eminem, Amy Winehouse and Lady GaGa.

Members of the Coldstream Guards are stationed at royal palaces as part of their duties.

The military band is described as the "oldest surviving recording artist", with a history of recording tunes spanning back more than a century.

Probably their best-known musical feat is the theme tune to TV programme Dad's Army.

Daniel Glatman, a former manager of boy band Blue, is guiding the Coldstream Guards through the music business.

He described the scenes on Horse Guards Parade as "amazing", saying the crowd was even bigger than ones he had seen for Blue.
