Climate activists storm RBS offices

Climate Camp protesters storm the Royal Bank of Scotland headquarters in Bishopsgate as part of their campaign against the organisation’s investments in fossil fuel projects

1 September 2009

CLIMATE change campaigners disguised as construction workers glued themselves together to block the foyer at the Royal Bank of Scotland headquarters today.

More than 100 protesters circled the Bishopsgate building in a demonstration against “unethical” investments.

Some formed a “human barricade” using stepladders and chains to block the entrance, but workers still managed to get through.

Other campaigners chained themselves to the bottom of the ladders with two more lying on the floor between them, also chained.

The Climate Camp For Action stormed the bank in protest at its investments in projects it considers “unethical”. Leaders of the group said the construction worker disguise reflects the banking world’s need to rebuild itself.

"RBS is 70 per cent owned by the public, but it is completely against the public interest for our money to be used to fund climate change"

A total of 100 protesters surrounded the bank chanting “Who’s bank? Our bank” and “Who’s future, our future”.

Demonstrators also unfurled banners reading: “RBS: Under New Ownership” and “Ethical Renovation in Progress”. The activists said they were protesting against the bank’s investments in fossil fuel projects, especially funding for the coal industry and tar sands extraction in Canada.

Protester James Clarke said: “RBS is 70 per cent owned by the public, but it is completely against the public interest for our money to be used to fund climate change. Yet again, the banks are putting profit over people.”

Climate camp activists also staged a protest on the roof of a building in Victoria Street, SW1, that houses PR company Edelman, which activists said was the firm behind advertising plans for a coal-fired power station at Kingsnorth in Kent.

The climate camp was set up in south-east London last Wednesday and will run until the end of this week.
