CCTV footage as suspects flee murder in Hackney

Police officers release footage of two male murder suspects running away from Amhurst Road to nearby Pembury Junction and the Pembury Estate in Hackney after the shooting of Edward Thompson

14 September 2009

SPRINTING down a street in London, these two men are wanted in connection with the murder of a "devoted" family man who was gunned down in a car as he sat in traffic.

Edward Thompson, 29, was shot dead last Sunday afternoon as he sat in the passenger seat of a friend's car in Hackney, east London.

Two young black men walked alongside the blue Volkswagen Polo and approached the open passenger window, firing a shot which hit Edward in the chest before running off.

Officers have now releasing footage of the two men as they ran away from Amhurst Road to nearby Pembury Junction and the Pembury Estate.

The dad-of-three was driven by his three friends from the scene to the nearby Homerton Hospital where he later died.

Detective Chief Inspector John Macdonald of the Met's Homicide and Serious Crime Command, who is leading the investigation, said: "A week on from Edward's murder we are releasing images of two suspects moments after Eddie was killed. They are seen sprinting from the scene at around 3.45pm towards the Pembury Estate.

"Edward was a family man and devoted to his three young children. We don't know why he was killed as he was a friendly guy whose background would not appear to warrant this type of targeted attack. He is desperately missed by his family who need to know why he was struck down in this way.

"We strongly believe that those responsible have connections with the local Hackney area and we urge anyone with information to come forward and assist."

Two men, both aged 20, were arrested in the Hackney area on 7 September and were taken to north London police stations. They were later bailed to return in late October.
