Camberwell death block tenants collect belongings
Victims of the Camberwell fire that killed six people including two young children and a baby have returned to Lakanal House to collect their belongings
6 August 2009
TENANTS have been allowed back into the south London tower block where six people died in a blaze last month.
A baby and two children were among those who were killed after fire ripped through Lakanal House in Camberwell on 3 July.
Residents of the first to seventh floors were allowed – in hard hats – to return to collect their belongings from the building for the first time yesterday. Residents of the upper floors must wait until a fire investigation has been completed before they can return.
Most of the 90 tenants are still in interim accommodation, waiting to be rehoused.
Tests suggested a faulty TV set caused the fire but experts are investigating whether cladding on the walls of the building may have contributed to the speed with which the fire spread.
Southwark Council is debating whether to demolish the 12-storey building.
