Boris Johnson vows make London the most eco-friendly city in Europe by turning City Hall's 8,000 vehicles electric
City Hall goes green
BORIS Johnson today vowed to turn City Hall’s 8,000 vehicles electric in a bid to make London the most eco-friendly city in Europe.
The Mayor said hitting the target of cutting carbon emissions by 60 per cent by 2025 would require cleaning up London’s public service fleet, which includes courier vans.
He is also backing WWF’s Earth Hour, in which 1 billion people in 1,000 cities around the world switch off their lights for an hour in a campaign aimed at urging governments to do more to tackle climate change.
Johnson said: “We have 8,000 vehicles in the [London] fleet and I want as many as possible to be electric.”
A total of 74 cities across 62 countries have already committed to take part in Earth Hour, which will take place from 8.30pm to 9.30pm on 28 March next year.
Johnson said: “I shall be sitting in the dark in a zen-like state brooding over the future of the world. Londoners will want to show a renewed commitment to the environment despite economic problems."
The Mayor also today appointed 16 “green champions”. The group, which includes designer Wayne Hemingway, will draw up environmental schemes.
They will have a year to finish projects to make London “greener and cleaner”.
