Body Worlds corpse couple have public sex

Dr Gunther von Hagens unveils a corpse couple at a shock Body Worlds exhibition at The O2 Arena in London's Greenwich

A DEAD couple had public sex for the first time in London today - as part of a controversial new exhibition at The O2 Arena.

Anatomist Gunther von Hagens, who has made his name through the Body Worlds displays of corpses, revealed a new exhibit today - a couple having sex.

The Sex Couple was unveiled in Berlin in May, and has been transferred to his Body Worlds & The Mirror Of Time show at the Greenwich

Von Hagens invented a technique - which he calls "plastination" - for preserving human bodies with their muscles, veins and bones on display while working at the University of Heidelberg in the 1970s.

The latest work, made from the bodies of two donors who gave their consent, attracted criticism in Germany, but von Hagens defended it.

He said: "It is the most human of all human acts - both primal and fundamental, and the reason we are all here on this spinning blue globe. I show all of human biology in Body Worlds.

"To censor the anatomy of sex so as not to offend would be compromised science and a contrived mischief to me."

Politicians in Germany called for the work to be pulled, branding it "disgusting".

It is not the first time he has sparked controversy. In 2002 he went ahead with the first public autopsy in 170 years in Britain.
