7/7 police officers held in expenses fraud probe

Three cops arrested over time spent checking suicide bombers' backgrounds in Leeds

13 May 2009

POLICE officers investigating the July 7 bombings have been arrested over allegations that they made large expenses claims during their investigations into the atrocity.

The claims relate to the time when they were away in Leeds finding background information on the suicide bombers who hit London in 2005.

Scotland Yard held the three Metropolitan Police officers yesterday on suspicion of misuse of corporate credit cards, misconduct in a public office, conspiracy to defraud, theft and false accounting.

Three members of the public, believed to be relatives of the officers, were also arrested.

A force spokeswoman said: "Three police officers were arrested yesterday following a proactive operation by the Met's Directorate of Professional Standards – Specialist Investigations Unit.

"The officers, two of whom are based in a Specialist Operations unit and one of whom is based in an east London borough, were arrested in connection with a number of offences, including misconduct in a public office, conspiracy to defraud, theft and false accounting.

"Three members of the public were also arrested as part of the operation.

"All six are currently in custody.

"The case has been referred to the IPCC for consideration.

"The MPS expects its staff to behave professionally, ethically and with the utmost integrity at all times.

"Any allegation that the conduct of our officers has fallen below this standard is treated extremely seriously in line with MPS policy."
